Illustrations
Below is a collection of my drawing and paintings. Mediums include: pencil, pen, watercolor, ink, charcoal, and spray paint.
Clear Night
I wanted to recreate being in nature while camping and looking up to see a dark sky illuminated by the moonlight and stars. The trees are drawn with 05 micron pen and white gel pen. The background is spray paint, but the moon was covered slightly to create the illusion of moonlight. The stars were added at the end with white gel pen.
Movie Still
This still is from My Neighbor Totoro by Studio Ghibili. The two characters are a medium (chu) and a small (chibi) forest spirits (totoros) walking through a backyard. The sketches were flatted with layers of ink wash. After the ink dried, I lined the small totoros with micron pen and layered on charcoal. The cast shadow was created with condensed charcoal and the remainder of the background was vine charcoal.
Drapery
The reference for this piece was a large sheet tied with woven rope around stools and statues. I focused on a smaller part of the reference to emphasize the creases in the drape. The sheet was created with layers of vine charcoal while the rope was made with condensed charcoal for contrast and depth.
Wavy Glass
The reference was a wavy glass bottle filled with water and has two paintbrushes inside. The light refracted through the glass which made some interesting highlights. I gravitated towards this bottle because of its unique shape. Everything was drawn with a white Prismacolor pencil.
Still Life
This piece was created to practice achieving a range of values and utilize blending. There was a mannequin behind a box covered in fabric which was then partially covered by a watering can and a pumpkin. I was interested in this section of the reference because allowed me to draw a wide range of curves and play with lighting. Everything was drawn with 2H, HB or 6B pencil.
Watercolor
The reference was intriguing because of the lantern in the background and the layering of leaves in the foreground. There was a depth and wide variation in color that I wanted to try to recreate. It was reminiscent of fall with the color scheme, which was visually appealing.
