MY SKILLS
Background & Expertise
Project Lead, Center for Civic Engagement (CCE)
January 2019–May 2020
As the Project Lead for the CCE, I acted as the liaison between three clients on Washington State University (WSU) campus and a group of seven students that I led. Together, we tackled the issue of food insecurity. We promoted each client's food pantry and their resources for students. I delegated tasks to the students during weekly team meetings. The content created included digital signage, press releases, recipe templates, creative briefs, pamphlets, and flyers. Before the content was provided to the client, I edited and provided feedback to each student. Each food pantry had a different set of needs. The College for Success Program department has a food pantry that only specific groups of students could use. Therefore, our promotional content needed to emphasize the requirements that students needed to meet before using the resources.
The Office of Access and Opportunity has a food pantry that is open to all students. However, they have limited funding and inconsistent donations. The strategy for this food pantry was to spread awareness of the location of the food pantry and to promote healthy donations. Our last client was a team working on The All Campus Food Drive. They recently rebranded the event. We helped the city of Pullman, Washington understand the logistics and the reason for the food drive and the rebranding.
Project Lead, Whitman County Public Health
May 2019–December 2019
In May through August, I acted as the Social Media and Promotions Intern for Whitman County Public Health (WCPH). I created social media content for national and local health events. After creating the content, they were scheduled through Hootsuite. When I took over the WCPH social media platforms they had low levels of engagement. In order for the posts to have the highest reach and levels of engagement, I analyzed the performance of each post to see which content and which times performed the best. My job also entailed creating fact sheets, blog posts, and press releases. Both the blog posts and fact sheets can be found on https://www.whitmancountypublichealth.org/.
As the CCE Project Lead, I continued this work by directing a class. The class split into teams that managed PR, grassroots efforts, website details, digital content creation, and social media. I edited the content that the students in this class created. I also acted as the contact for people at WCPH, the teacher, and the students in the class. I taught the students how to create content that aligned with the brand, use Hootsuite, and organize events. If WCPH needed content with a quick turn around then I would create and post it myself.
PR Liasion, Associated Students of Washington State University (ASWSU)
September 2018–May 2019
As the Public Relations Liasion, I was the only member of the Senate's communication team. One of the concerns that the 48th ASWSU Senate had is that they were removed from their constituents. As a solution, I created an Instagram page, aswsup_senate. Senators and Delegates would introduce themselves and show students what a typical week looked like for them through the Senator and Delegate Spotlights on the Instagram page. During the weekly Senate meetings, I connected with the assigned reporter from The Daily Evergreen. We would clarify any questions she had about legislation or the topics discussed that day. I would also assist in arranging interviews with the senators or delegates.
Monthly meeting were held with the Editor -in- Chief of the Daily Evergreen. During our meetings, we would address errors in stories about the Senate and the upcoming events that were supported or led by Senate members. I was also attended the Joint City Council meetings with the Pullman City Council and ASWSU Senate which occurred twice a year.
MY STUDENT PROJECTS
PR TEAM
This team was created in order to provide Whitman County Public Health with communication support during the Spring 2018 semester. The team contained four students, including myself. We created public relations literature such as fact sheets. After this course, I continued on an intern and and later was promoted to a Project Lead.
Phoenix Conservancy
For this project, each team worked with a local organization to create a crisis communication plan (CCP). We partnered with Phoneix Conservancy, a small non-profit, focused on restoring endangered ecosystems. The CCP consisted of a risk and threat assessment, identifying stakeholders, media lists, samples of messaging for both traditional and social media, and creating an mock press release.
